De boycot die faalde: het publiek gaf Nederland, Spanje en Ierland een les

Nederland, Spanje en Ierland wilden een politiek signaal afgeven door afstand te nemen van het Eurovisie Songfestival vanwege de deelname van Israël. Dat was hun goed recht. Wat minder prettig voor de voorstanders van die boycot is, is wat er vervolgens gebeurde.

Israël eindigde als tweede.

Sterker nog, volgens de cijfers van de EBU kwamen opvallend veel stemmen voor de Israëlische inzending juist uit landen die zich het hardst tegen de Israëlische deelname hadden gekeerd. Nederland, Spanje en Ierland stonden hoog op de lijst van landen waar vandaan veel stemmen werden uitgebracht.

Dat maakt één ding duidelijk. De bestuurders, omroepen en activisten spraken niet namens iedereen. Integendeel. Een groot deel van het publiek trok zijn eigen plan.

De ironie is bijna pijnlijk. Terwijl een kleine groep probeerde het Songfestival om te vormen tot een politiek strijdtoneel, deden miljoenen kijkers precies waarvoor het evenement ooit bedoeld was. Zij luisterden naar muziek, bekeken de optredens en stemden op hun favoriet.

Blijkbaar vonden veel Europeanen dat een zanger of zangeres niet verantwoordelijk is voor alle politieke beslissingen van een regering. Een gedachte die vroeger heel normaal was, maar tegenwoordig soms revolutionair lijkt.

De echte verliezer van deze affaire is niet Israël. De echte verliezer is het idee dat culturele evenementen steeds vaker worden gebruikt als politiek drukmiddel. Want als het publiek massaal de andere kant op stemt, blijkt hoe groot de kloof is tussen activistische bestuurders en gewone kijkers.

Ook de kijkcijfers vertellen een verhaal. Het Songfestival verloor miljoenen kijkers. Een deel daarvan kwam doordat landen afhaakten. Daarmee werd niet Israël geraakt, maar vooral het evenement zelf en de miljoenen muziekliefhebbers die opnieuw werden geconfronteerd met politieke ruzies waar zij niet om hadden gevraagd.

Misschien is het tijd dat Nederland, Spanje en Ierland een eenvoudige les trekken uit deze editie. Als miljoenen burgers blijven kijken, blijven stemmen en een Israëlische inzending naar de top stemmen, dan is de kans groot dat de boycot vooral een gesprek was tussen bestuurders, omroepen en activisten onderling.

Het publiek had allang iets anders besloten.

Wie dacht Israël een lesje te leren, kreeg zelf een les in democratie. Terwijl bestuurders een politiek statement maakten, maakten kijkers een democratisch statement. Zij stemden niet op basis van slogans, campagnes of politieke voorkeuren, maar op basis van muziek.

En dat is misschien wel de grootste ergernis voor de voorstanders van de boycot. Uiteindelijk bleek dat hun boodschap veel minder draagvlak had dan zij dachten.

BREAKING: TOTAL SURRENDER! The Kennedy Center moves to fully comply with a federal judge by removing Donald Trump's name from every inch of the building.

He's so defeated that he's not even putting up a fight...

The center's general counsel sent out an official memo earlier today directing employees to begin stripping Trump's name from all materials including brochures, signs, and the official website. Email signatures and letterhead must be changed immediately.

The sweeping direction comes less than a week after U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that the Kennedy Center Board — which is staffed with MAGA hatchet men — did not have the authority to tack their cult leader's name onto the beloved institution. The new memo is the first time that the Board has publicly conceded that they will heed the judge's order.

In his ruling, Cooper tore into the board for using “an insufficient, one-sided presentation of information” when it moved to close the center. Additionally, federal law “makes crystal clear” that the center is named after JFK and only JFK.

“Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name and only Congress can change it," wrote Cooper.

Beyond just directing the removal of Trump's name, the memo provides specific deadlines for compliance. This is not some abstract "we'll get to it eventually" response. This is concrete compliance.

This victory over MAGA is particularly sweet because the renaming of the Kennedy Center, as petty as it is, is something that Trump cares deeply about. It's part of his broader obsession with building and renovating structures after himself. He knows that his presidency is a historic failure and he's desperately grasping for some semblance of a legacy. Now, he's being denied even that.

Putin did not defeat the United States militarily. He did not need to. He simply looked Trump in the eye, and Trump tucked his tail and trotted home.

On June 3rd, U.S. European Command confirmed it. A third of America’s fighter jets assigned to NATO, gone. Half its strategic bombers, gone. Submarine commitments, eliminated entirely. The Financial Times reported the cuts were more sweeping than anyone had expected.

European capitals are not panicking. They are seething. The reaction across the continent is not fear, it is contempt. Cold, quiet, lasting contempt for a man they have watched perform weakness for years and are now watching formalise it in writing. Europeans despise weakness. They have a long memory for it. And they will not forget this.

Trump is described across Europe, by serious people in serious rooms, as the most cowardly president America has ever produced. Not dangerous. Not unpredictable. Cowardly. A man who mistakes grovelling for diplomacy and calls it a deal. In Warsaw, Tallinn, Paris and Berlin the verdict is the same: America turned out to be considerably smaller than advertised. The paper tiger accusation Washington spent decades throwing at its rivals has come home. It fits perfectly.

Russia and China are not hiding their amusement. Putin did not fire a shot. He just needed Trump to perceive strength and respond the way Trump always responds to strength: with immediate, grateful submission.

American generals and admirals are furious and humiliated. Officers who spent careers building the structures that kept the peace are watching it get packed into boxes by a man who flinches when Putin clears his throat. The word used in private, repeatedly, is embarrassing.

Every soldier, sailor and general in the United States Armed Forces knows exactly what has happened here. They just cannot say it out loud. Because the man who gave the order is still in the building.
