50 years in tech, evolved from Army electronics to Salesforce security. Working on my 2nd novel, and on what it takes for boys to become worthwhile men.

The letters are invented. The advice is mine. I would like to think Major General Teddy Roosevelt Jr (1887–1944, son of our 26th president) would approve.
✒️Q: Dear Teddy Jr., My 6-year-old son says only girls wash clothes.

May 24, 1969. Kontum Province, near Ben Het. Australian Warrant Officer Keith Payne is commanding a company of Montagnard strike force troops when a much larger North Vietnamese force hits them from three sides.
His soldiers start to fall back. Payne runs from position to position, collecting grenades and throwing them at the attackers. Shrapnel hits him in the hands and arms.
The line breaks anyway. The battalion commander, several advisers and a few soldiers pull back. Payne covers them with grenades and his rifle.
Then he runs across open ground under fire, gets in front of his own retreating troops, stops them, and by nightfall has the survivors of two companies dug into a perimeter.
Then he goes back out, alone, into the dark.
For about three hours, under fire, he searches the battlefield. He finds about 40 lost soldiers, many of them wounded, and brings them back. When he gets there, the rest of the battalion has pulled out and left.
So Payne leads the whole group, helping carry a badly wounded American adviser himself, through enemy-held ground to safety.
He was awarded the Victoria Cross, plus the American Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star. He later spent decades counseling veterans with PTSD. A psychiatric unit for veterans in Brisbane is named after him.
Today he is 92. He is the last living Australian to hold the original Victoria Cross.
People complain about inequality of outcomes while evading inequality of effort, discipline, decisions, long-term investment over short-term gratification, and the ability to create, market, and build a reputation around something others value.
Because once you admit those things are unequal, unequal outcomes stop being inherently suspicious. They become not only inevitable, but often perfectly justified.

✒️ Q: Dear Teddy Jr., My wife wants me to read sanitized nursery rhymes to our baby.
👉 Teddy Jr says: Read whatever you love. Your voice matters more than the words.

Have you ever reread something you wrote years ago and barely recognized yourself?
The voice feels different.
The priorities have changed.
Sometimes an old manuscript reveals more about who you were than the story itself.
Fiction: Defriending the Librarian - Chapters 6-8 Are Live.
The Gray Zone's top software architect is found hanging from a balcony. A grieving sister hires Derek O'Brien (aka the Librarian) to prove her brother was murdered. All he has to do is survive long enough to get paid.
From the beginning to Chapter 5 is free now. New chapters drop every Wednesday on Ream. Link in comments.
Next Wednesday: Derek gains access to a dead man's apartment and falls to temptation - to near disastrous results.
The quiet reality of being an indie author:
You spend months pouring your soul into a manuscript.
You obsess over cover designs and formatting late into the night.
You hit publish and pray the algorithm doesn't bury it.
You celebrate every single sale like a massive victory.
Self-publishing isn't for the faint of heart.
Huge respect to every writer out there putting in the work behind the scenes to bring their stories to life. Keep writing.
