Tatu City was not just a land dispute, it was a fight over how 10,000+ acres of old coffee land became one of Kenya’s biggest private city projects. It was one of the biggest boardroom wars Kenya has ever seen.
- Vimal Shah (Bidco Billionaire)
- Nahashon Nyagah (Former CBK Governor)
- Stephen Mwagiru (Coffee Farmer)
- Stephen Jennings (New Zealand Investor)
- A 50% stake.
- A $20M deposit allegedly paid… but later found in arbitration not to have been paid.
- And a Sh1.7B award that exposed how ugly the fight became.
Thread 🧵 👇🏾
I have received several questions about buying Family Bank shares on the OTC segment before listing and all I can say is that the hype is not worth it:
At KES 20 per share and from Family bank's FY25 results:
Family bank trades at 1.02x book value and 5.08x earnings.
For comparison, the median banking stock from the listed 11 counters trades at 1.0x book value and 6.3x earnings.
For banks, the PB ratio is the most important as banks are mainly valued against their net assets.
Rather than buy family bank, I would rather buy Equity, KCB, I&M bank, BK Group, etc.( all these trade below their book values)
Moreover, even on asset quality, family bank has an NPL ratio of 15.23% while the median NPL ratio in the banking sector sits at 10.5%
And for dividends, Family bank paid a DPS of 1.20 KES in FY25, giving it a dividend yield of 6% which is also below the banking sector median yield of 7.42%
Lastly, when it comes to ROE, it also ranks below the banking sector median of 19.2% as it sits at 16.5%
Do note that my numbers are based on current prices as of 4th June 2026 and FY25 results.
Don't be driven by hype, let your financial decisions be backed by concrete data

Should the taxpayer still bear the burden of proof in instances where a tax dispute with the Revenue Authority is based in pre-populated & third party data?
In my submission before the National Assembly's Finance & Planning Committee on behalf of the Tax Research Centre at @StrathU, I argue that Finance Bill 2026's proposals seeking to anchor Incomes & Expenses Validation in law will be incomplete if they do not include a proposal for the the Revenue Authority being saddled with the burden of proof in such instances.
Here's why:
· Finance Bill 2026 proposes to amend Sec75 of the Tax Procedures Act to provide that the Revenue Authority may use technology to pre-populate tax returns on behalf of a person required to submit or lodge a tax return
· Finance Bill 2026 further proposes that a person required to submit or lodge a tax return may rely on pre-populated return generated by the Revenue Authority to file their return
· Finance Bill 2026 proposes to amend Sec112 to provide that the Cabinet Secretary of the National Treasury may make Regulations for the procedure for the submission or lodging of returns based on pre-populated tax returns generated by the Revenue Authority
Here's where the problem is:
· In all this, Sec56(1) which provides that "In any proceedings, the burden shall be on the taxpayer to prove that a tax decision is incorrect" remains unchanged
· Sec56(1) is predicated on the fact that Kenya has been running on a self-assessment based regime & the data upon which tax disputes emerges was held by the taxpayer
· With Incomes & Expenses Validation & the onset of a Dual Assessment regime in Kenya, taxpayers are now exposed not just to errors of judgement & data on their part, but also errors of technology & transmission which are out of their control
· Can we really still have the burden of proof lying exclusively with the taxpayer in an environment where tax compliance has shifted from a function of record keeping to one where system integration reliability is now a key factor?
What Julians has submitted is extremely critical. Extremely.
Right now:
• You partly tell KRA what you earned
• You tell KRA what tax you owe
If finance Bill 2026 passes,
It is KRA that will strictly tell YOU:
• What you earned
• What tax you owe
How?
• By pulling data from anywhere
• eTIMS, banks, third parties, govt ministries integrations, etc
If KRA sends you a tax bill. And it is insane. And you disagree. Who must prove it is wrong?
The bill says it is you.
But here is the danger. KRA is NOT required to tell you:
• Where they got the data from
• Or how they arrived at the figures
So you are left there. Trying to fight numbers you cannot see.
And some of those numbers could be system errors.
Now ask yourself,
- How do you disprove something you don’t even understand? Are you an angel?
What Julians is saying is simple.
If KRA wants to tax you using their data, KRA must prove to you and the courts that that data is:
• Accurate
• Reliable &
• Defensible
Is that a fair argument?
Or should taxpayers just fight ghosts?
People MUST resist Freehold Land being turned into Leasehold and oppressive TAXES imposed with the Land being auctioned upon failure to pay the those taxes. Objective is to disposess people of their Lands and turn them into labourers for the new owners. We have a CRIMINAL regime
This is what is generally overlooked:
• Free T3 and Free T4 (hormones that drive energy)
• Reverse T3 (can block metabolism)
• Thyroid antibodies (autoimmune activity)
• Pulse, temperature, cholesterol, blood sugar, sodium (clues to production)
Even this is only half the story...
Even if you don't pay a Loan, The Bank cannot sell your Land without giving you the following notices:
1. 90-day notice to remedy the default
2. 40-day notice of intention to sell - You can still redeem your land
3. 45-day redemption notice by an auctioneer - You can still redeem your land.
4. 14 days lapse ,after advertisement of sale by the auctioneer
If the banks fail to issue any of these notices,The sale can be challenged.Know your rights
Finance Bill 2026 wants to forgive your sins.
It proposes to waive:
• All penalties, interest and fines on tax arrears up to Dec 2025.
But on one condition. You must pay the principal tax by end of this year, 2026.
This is a welcome proposal.
It gives everyone a fresh tax start.
BREAKING: A massive court case has just put the pads and diapers used by millions of Kenyan women and babies under serious scrutiny.
Over 2,800 Kenyans have moved to court against makers of Always pads, Pampers diapers, Huggies diapers, Kotex sanitary pads and related products.
The case targets products linked to Procter & Gamble (Always, Pampers) and Kimberly-Clark (Kotex, Huggies).
The petitioners argue that products marketed as:
“100% cotton”
“pure cotton”
“soft like cotton”
actually contain significant synthetic materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene and other petrochemical-based compounds.
And that is why this case matters.
Millions of Kenyan mothers, women and families buy these products believing they are mainly cotton-based and safer for prolonged contact.
But according to the petitioners, the products may contain far more synthetic material than consumers are led to believe.
The lawsuit also raises concerns about possible long-term exposure to synthetic materials, especially for women and children who use these products regularly.
The petitioners want:
- Full ingredient disclosure
- Independent testing through KEBS
- Removal of allegedly misleading labels
- Compensation for affected consumers
The case, first filed in 2024, has reportedly faced delays and is now before the Court of Appeal under COACAPPL/E012/2026 seeking orders to fast-track it and is being heard this week.
This is a case that could change product labelling in Kenya forever.
But what is already in court may only be part of the story.
I also have additional data and information from tests we conducted on sanitary pads that I will be sharing later.
Some of the findings raised serious questions for us.
So follow me - Sholla Ard.- There is a lot many kenyans still do not know about products they use every month.

NSE banking stocks — you don’t need to own all of them. Here’s how to narrow it down:
a) KCB vs Equity — pick one. More alike than different; prices often move in tandem. Little incremental value owning both.
b) I&M vs Co-op — pick one. Both walk the same tightrope between growth and income distribution.
c) Stanchart vs Stanbic — pick one. Pure dividend plays. Choose whichever yield and balance sheet you trust more.
d) BK Group — genuinely distinct. Different risk/return profile from the rest of the NSE banking pack.
e) DTB & HFCK — the laggards. Low ROE, thin-to-no dividends. If you hold either, have a clear thesis why.
The goal isn’t coverage — it’s conviction. 3–4 names, high confidence, no filler.
The NSE is full of noise.
But right now, there are 5 stocks with real fundamentals, real upside, and in some cases — dividends about to hit your account.
Here are the top 5 stocks I'd buy on the NSE this May.
