The Brain's Self-Cleaning System: How Meditation Activates Neural Waste Clearance

In 2012, the University of Rochester neuroscience group, led by Maiken Nedergaard, published a paradigm-shifting paper identifying the glymphatic system. In 2013, Xie et al. demonstrated that glymphatic clearance is dramatically increased during sleep. This process is reduced in aging. In 2025, a group from Vanderbilt University showed that the brain's CSF flow during meditation shifted from a turbulent, bidirectional pattern (associated with neurodegeneration) toward a more efficient, directionally consistent pattern- the same shift seen during healthy sleep. It is as if meditation temporarily reverses the CSF flow signature. This research included expert meditators from the Isha Yoga Foundation (Samyama, Shambhavi), Vipassana, etc.
