The Mandsaur Pashupatinath Temple in Madhya Pradesh is world-famous for its rare Ashtamukhi (eight-faced) Shivalinga carved from a single piece of dark copper-colored stone.
Standing on the banks of the Shivna River, this 4,600 kg, 11.25-foot idol is divided into two tiers of four faces each. The top four heads are refined, clearly depicting Shiva at various ages (childhood to old age), while the bottom four heads are unrefined and partially carved.
The eight faces specifically symbolize the eight aspects of Shiva: Bhava, Pashupati, Mahadeva, Isana, Rudra, Sharva, Ugra, and Asani.
The massive Linga wasn’t man-made. It was miraculously discovered submerged in the riverbed of the Shivna by a shepherd named Punya Dasa, after one of his cows mysteriously stopped giving milk at the exact spot every day.
Dating Back to the Guptas: Archaeological estimates date the sculptural origin of the Linga to the Gupta Empire era (5th–6th century AD), commissioned by King Yashovarman of the Aulikar dynasty.
During the heavy monsoons, the Shivna river levels frequently rise to physically touch the feet of the Shivalinga, a natural phenomenon locals consider the river’s way of offering an eternal Abhishek to the deity.
The temple spire is crowned with a 100 kg gold-plated Kalash (pitcher), making the temple instantly recognizable.
