Press Release: Ethiopia’s Deplorable Acts of Hostility

The Ethiopian Government issued a Press Statement today announcing the closure of the Eritrean Embassy to Ethiopia as well as declaring ten Eritrean Diplomats, including the Charge d ’Affairs and other Eritrean Diplomats accredited to the African Union as “persona non grata”.

To justify these unwarranted acts of hostility, the Ethiopian Government has turned the tables to accuse Eritrea for “direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence against Ethiopia”.

This is astounding indeed.

In reality, it is Ethiopia which has been pursuing an agenda of incessant hostility – in effect, a publicly pronounced declaration of war - against Eritrea for three years in pursuit of “the imperative of acquiring sovereign access to the sea” through the invasion of sovereign Eritrean ports and coastal areas.

In parallel with these aggressive intentions, Ethiopia has gone further to host, train, and provide arms, to an assortment of what it calls “Eritrean armed opposition groups” to stoke internal conflict for “regime change” in Eritrea.

Throughout these trying times, Eritrea has displayed patience and restraint in the hope of averting a dangerous escalation.

In the current circumstances, however, Eritrea has no option but to reciprocate in kind and severe all diplomatic ties with Ethiopia with all the negative corollaries that this entails. #Eritrea

🇪🇷ERITREA’s Week Review at the UNGA81

Eritrean delegation led by H.E. Osman Saleh, Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated actively in the High-Level Week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, advancing Eritrea’s diplomatic engagement and positions on regional, continental and global issues.

This morning, 28 September, Minister Osman delivered Eritrea’s national statement at the UNGA81 General Debate, presenting Eritrea’s perspectives on international peace and security, #sovereignty and territorial integrity, the #Horn of #Africa and #Red #Sea region, genuine #multilateralism, development and other issues of international concern.

Throughout the week, the delegation participated in high-level #UN meetings and interventions, including the 40th Anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development, the High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response, the plenary on sea-level rise, and the 50th Annual Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the G77 and China. Eritrea emphasized sovereign equality, self-reliance, equitable development, South-South cooperation and a more representative multilateral system.

The delegation also held a series of bilateral and high-level meetings with UN officials and senior government representatives, including UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the Foreign Ministers of #Algeria, #Burkina Faso, #Egypt, #Sudan, #Sweden, #Oman, #Singapore, #Andorra and #Greece, as well as UN Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, #European #Union special representative and #UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell.

Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam, in her capacity as one of the 21 Vice-Presidents of UNGA81, presided over a plenary session during the general debate.

Eritrea’s message at the United Nations goes beyond climate vulnerability. It places the country’s coastline, islands, marine ecosystems, maritime zones, and sovereign rights within the same strategic framework. With more than 350 islands, an extensive Red Sea coastline, and a maritime territory comprising roughly half its land mass, sea-level rise is not an abstract environmental issue for Eritrea it is a national, economic, ecological, and maritime-security concern. (Eritrea Ministry Of Information)

The emphasis on preserving baselines and maritime boundaries is equally important. For a coastal state, climate change cannot become a mechanism through which physical changes to coastlines gradually translate into uncertainty over maritime rights. Eritrea’s position is that international law must provide stability, predictability, and continuity for coastal states facing environmental change.

The statement also places responsibility on the littoral states themselves. Eritrea’s call for stronger coastal adaptation, marine protected areas, coral-reef restoration, mangrove protection, resilient infrastructure, and a sustainable Blue Economy reflects an approach in which environmental protection and maritime governance are inseparable. The health of the Red Sea ecosystem ultimately depends on the stewardship of the states that border it.

This is why Eritrea’s final point carries particular strategic weight: littoral states are indispensable to securing a sustainable and stable maritime ecosystem. The Red Sea is not merely an international shipping corridor drawn on a map. It is a living maritime region whose security, ecology, resources, and sovereignty are anchored in its coastal states.

In that sense, Eritrea’s position is clear: protecting the Red Sea begins with protecting the rights, ecosystems, communities, and sovereign maritime spaces of the states that actually border it.

#Eritrea - Hoye Hoye: Ritual, Renewal, and the Art of Togetherness; by Milkla Teklom

*"... Eritrea’s diversified and multi-cultural calendar is stitched with rituals that deeply bind the communities to history, the Christian and Islamic faiths, and the land".

*"...Among these, kudus Yohannes and Meskel - the latter will be celebrated tomorrow - for the Christian communities, stand out as moments when time itself seems to fold: ancient liturgy meets village life, and the ordinary becomes ceremonial. Known locally through the practice of Hoye Hoye, this season of observance is not a singular event but a cycle of three linked celebrations that weave together Old Testament memory, Christian transition, and the discovery of the Cross. In Eritrean towns and highland villages, these festivities act both as a spiritual hinge and a communal festival—a time when men and women assume distinct but complementary roles in preparing for collective renewal.

*"...Eritrea’s experience has shown the value of strong national ownership. Prevention and preparedness have been central to its health approach, supported by government leadership and community-based health systems. Its National Action Plan for Health Security further strengthens surveillance, emergency response and coordination".

*"...International cooperation should support, not replace, national capacity. It must also address the inequalities in technology, production and access that became so clear during COVID-19".

#Eritrea's delegation, led by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh, is participating in the 81st UN General Assembly Debate. The delegation will conduct, throughout the Session, a series of crucial bilateral and high-level meetings reflecting Eritrea's steadfast commitment to the principles of the UN Charter & international law, inclusive and equitable multilateralism, and a just world order.

In this vein, FM Osman Saleh met yesterday UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for extensive discussions on vital regional and global matters. The Foreign Minister conveyed Eritrea's appreciation for the SG's services to the Organization and for his constructive engagement with Eritrea.

FM Osman further underlined the enduring importance of the UN Charter and the foundational pillars that it espouses - i.e. sovereign equality, territorial integrity, political independence, non-interference and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

FM Osman elucidated Eritrea's position on the Sudan that is anchored on support to a united, sovereign and stable Sudan; and a Sudanese-owned, inclusive political process supported by regional and international mechanisms.

On the wider region and especially in regard to the security of the Red Sea and Bab-al Mandab, FM Osman stressed Eritrea's support for safe maritime navigation and international cooperation, while respecting the sovereignty and legitimate interests of the littoral States. FM Osman also dwelt on provocative acts of Ethiopia's Prosperity Party towards its neighbours in flagrant breach of the foundational principles of the UN Charter and international law.

As it will be recalled, Eritrea was elected as one of the Vice-Presidents of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. In this respect, Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam presided over the evening plenary debate, during the opening day of UNGA81, on behalf of Eritrea and in her capacity as VPGA.

#Eritrea - Statement by Foreign Minister Osman Saleh at UNGA81 High-Level Segment to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development;
New York, 23 September 2026

*"...We cannot deny that the current global economic architecture continues to reflect structural imbalances that penalize developing nations. Unfair trade barriers, arbitrary financial restrictions, unsustainable debt burdens, and Unilateral coercive measures make it difficult for Global South developing nations to choose independent policies that best suit their own needs. Instead, they are forced to follow rules designed by wealthier nations. Eritrea reiterates its firm position that UCMs are incompatible with the UN Charter and violate the fundamental right of peoples to determine their own socio-economic paths".

*"...To accelerate the realization of the right to development, and to build a just and sustainable future, I wish to highlight the following points:
1. Respecting the right of states to chart independent political and development policies.
2. Eliminating Unilateral Coercive Measures that restrict access to resources, technology, and international markets.
3. Restructuring multilateral financial and economic institutions to ensure genuine representation and fair rules for developing countries.
4. Supporting the elaboration and adoption of a legally binding instrument on the right to development to enforce accountability and concrete international obligations".
