The Two Arrows ☸️
Dear Friends, Listed in The Samyutta Nikaya scripture of The Pali Canon is The Sallatha Sutta aka "The Parable of The Dart". In this, Shakyamuni Buddha offers one of the most psychologically deep teachings in Buddhism.
The World Honoured One says that when an ordinary person experiences pain and suffering, it is like being struck by two arrows.
The first arrow is the unavoidable pain of life: illness, loss, disappointment, anxiety, rejection, aging.
But then comes the second arrow.
"Why is this happening to me?"
"What if it gets worse?"
"This should not be happening."
"I will never recover from this."
The mind resists the pain, builds stories around it, fears it, relives it, and feeds it with endless thought.
This second arrow is often more painful than the first.
The Buddha teaches that while physical and emotional pain may arise in life, much of human suffering is intensified by mental clinging and resistance. The Awakened Mind still feels pain - but it does not continuously wound itself with fear, resentment, and overthinking.
This teaching feels deeply relevant today.
Modern minds are often trapped in loops of anxiety, anticipation, and inner narration. One difficult moment becomes a hundred imagined ones.
Meditation and Mindfulness therefore are not ways of escaping pain.
They are ways of not adding the second arrow.
And in that space, suffering begins to soften. 🙏

A bodhisattva should perfect the perfection of giving, by way of seeing that no renunciation has taken place ― since gift, giver, and recipient have not been apprehended.
