This astutely touches on another malady plaguing the Western “Left”: they cannot conceive of anti-imperialist projects like Venezuela, Cuba, DPRK or the Islamic Republic of Iran being populated by people with actual agency actively engaged in collectively and democratically building something meaningful in the face of insurmountable odds. This is because these miseducated Western chauvinists have little to no sense of what socialist or anti-imperialist construction even looks like in practice. They have never seen their government even entertain the possibility and certainly never set their own hands to build anything like it in their own community. So when they look at The Brown People Over There passionately defending their government, they can only conclude it’s because “The Authoritarian Regime” has either brainwashed or blackmailed them into maintaining the party line. There’s no openness to the possibility that these people might actually feel their dreams and commitments reflected in the every day operations and long term plans of the state.
