Everytime I read this young man’s story it absolutely shatters my heart.

He was not born blind.
He did not have to live life without eyes.
He is only blind today because an armed criminal robber shot him in the face and destroyed his eyes.

At the risk of being misunderstood, no matter how many slums the government renovates in Nigeria, most of them will eventually return to the same state. So it’s pointless.

People’s environment is a big reflection of their mindset, that’s why when you grow mentally, you begin to feel really uncomfortable about even your physical environment and appearance, you want to do anything within your ability to keep at least your own personal spaces neat, even though a neat slum.

And this is not a matter of rich or poor, you can be poor financially but rich in mindset, the riches in the mindset will automatically reflect in the slum environment.

Have you ever worn a cloth neatly for years and the moment you give it out to someone, it only a matter of few weeks before that beautiful cloth begin to turn brown and fade away. This one still happened to me last Christmas.

The first step to transformation is not changing from outside, it’s really changing from inside out!
Maintenance culture is more about the quality of the users mind and not so much about budgets.

Build the roads, but importantly build the people.

Let me tell you a story.

Some Nigerian students do the same in the EU, especially in Germany where there is no tuition. They come in, pay semester fees and that's all. They don't attend classes and all they do is work, work, work - at restaurants, bars, printing press, DHL, Amazon, etc. Because they know that they only need a semester registration to get jobs, they pay the fees every semester.

I remember some of them whom I met when I was doing my side hustle after classes in 2017 giving me the same advise.

"Leave school come make money jare. Na money all of us dey find. Instead wey you go waste 2 years for MSc, use am hustle make enough money do things for Naija."

I looked at them and laughed and told them I didn't just come for MSc, I want to do a PhD too. Then they say "5 years plus for school? Which kind waste be that"?

Today, I can travel to any country of my choice and live/work anywhere in this world. But they are stuck in Germany doing the same odd jobs since 2017. Some of them hop from one MSc studies and university to another. Some can't even dare to travel out of Germany.

Nigerians and their love for money and greed always RUIN things. It's such a shame.
