The first published claim of a Wuhan market origin was received 16 January 2020, a paper out of HKU by Yuen et al. Yuen was later forced to publicly walk back the claim and his comments. Zhou has a tie to Yuen and Drosten. He provided mice for them.

US intel agencies writ large barely lean lab leak with mostly low confidence. They don’t agree on a scenario. They don’t agree WIV was the source. It’s not clear how they establish Wuhan as Location-0. Their timelines conflict. They do agree SARS2 is not engineered.

HZAU researchers surveyed 2018 to 2020 cat viruses in China, published 2023. This after studies on SARS2 cat serology and FIP cats in Wuhan, FCoV spike genes in central China, novel FCoV clones, and testing FCoV drugs on SARS2.
In China, cats received a lot of attention, quietly.

They knew the SARS2 FCS was a match for FCoV1 and the CGG codon isn't comparatively rare. They knew other peculiar features of SARS2 are also present in FCoV1. They knew SARS2 didn’t emerge adapted for humans. They knew about D614G and H655Y as gateway mutations. They knew a lot.

Cats were susceptible to and could transmit D614 SARS2. Cats are the only species experimentally demonstrated to bottleneck for D614G, and cats were more productively infected by variants after D614G through Delta.
Cats aren’t very susceptible to Omicron. Why not?

There were hundreds of cases on the Diamond Princess, it was human serial passage. D614G didn’t appear. There isn’t a single case of D614G bottlenecking in a human anywhere. The only species proven to bottleneck for gateway mutation D614G was cats.
