One question about the 9/11 tragedy is rarely looked at from an aviation perspective, how were two hijacked airliners actually flown into individual skyscrapers with such accuracy?
The answer becomes much more interesting when you look at how the two aircraft actually reached their targets.
Mohamed Atta and Marwan al-Shehhi the two hijackers were trained pilots. Both had earned FAA commercial pilot certificates in the United States and had simulator experience. They did use the 767’s normal navigation systems to reach the New York area.
From there, the problem changed completely. They were no longer searching for coordinates. The Twin Towers rose more than 400 metres above Manhattan and could be acquired visually from miles away.
Flight 11 hit at roughly 440 mph. Flight 175 followed seventeen minutes later at around 540 mph,
And the second pilot had an unmistakable reference the first never had. Flight 175 made a huge banking turn toward Manhattan, where one of the two targets was already burning, with a massive column of smoke rising above the skyline.
