“100 Days of Deception” music director Kim Tae-seong shares some fascinating insights into the drama’s score, its underlying themes and what to listen out for in upcoming episodes~~

Having previously worked with director Yoo In-sik on “The Wonderfools”, Kim recalls being invited to collaborate on what Yoo described as a “Romeo and Juliet story set during the Japanese colonial period”. Initially expecting a romance in which espionage merely posed an obstacle, he discovered that the story was just as committed to portraying the independence movement.

His two guiding principles were to preserve the dignity of a period drama and infuse the story of young independence fighters with hope. Rather than dwell on the sense of defeat often associated with the colonial era, he wanted the music to convey the hope of what was to come. In particular, he wanted the music accompanying Ga-gyeong’s appearances to beat in time with the pulse of young people filled with excitement and hope.

The opening theme, developed with music director Choi Jeong In from a melody that came to him while working on the teaser, combines strings reminiscent of classic Italian cinema with modern classical music, encompassing the drama’s hope, excitement and tragedy.

Interestingly, there are almost no individual character themes, apart from one for a mysterious character. Instead, the music centres on relationships:

• Ga-gyeong and Hideo/Tae-woong’s theme conveys the excitement and atmosphere of their moments together through its use of space, tracing how one person’s dream grows into a shared dream.

• So-ran and Philip’s theme expresses a more mature, profound love.

Both couples’ themes are also grounded in love for their homeland, extending beyond romance to encompass love for future generations.

Kim singles out Ga-gyeong’s first entrance into the Government-General as a particularly meaningful musical moment, when the story’s tragedy begins to intensify.

He also reveals that he and Choi Jeong In carefully wrote the lyrics for a song composed using words from letters, conveying messages from the dead to the living. It will appear in different versions throughout the drama.

Key musical themes introduced in earlier episodes will return later in new contexts, while he also hints at emotions concealed within the lyrics of songs yet to be heard.
