Bioinformatics asks: given this data, what patterns exist?
Computational biology asks: what data should exist so that the biological question survives digitization?
My family moved to the US when I was 8, but by the time I turned 20, my dad was still on an H1B (waiting to get processed for a green card).
Once I turned 21, I would age out as his dependent, despite the fact that I basically grew up in the US.
I thought I'd have to become a code monkey after college, and even that only if I was lucky enough to win the H1B lottery.
Otherwise, back to India.
I had become a huge fan of @paulg's essays in college. I was actually depressed that my desire to start a startup or do something entrepreneurial was basically hopeless.
Working on the promising podcast I was doing as a side project? A beyond impossible pipe dream.
Even after 9 years, my dad wasn't able to get a green card - and the lines were only getting longer over time. I figured I'd be an old man before I could quit some FANG job and build my own thing.
By some miracle, COVID travel restrictions cleared out the lines, and I got my green card literally months before I would have aged out.
If not for this unbelievable coincidence, I would not be hosting the podcast.
In the best case, I would be shifting pixels around in the 3rd sub-sub-menu of some big tech software.
I'm incredibly grateful I made it through.
But it's unconscionable that we put the kids of high skilled immigrants through all this anxiety, and in many cases make them repeat the nerve-racking indentured life trajectory that they had to watch their parents go through.
I have spent my entire life working on this and thinking about this for the past 4 years. I don't know what will happen in 20 years, but I can promise you that on the 5-10 year timescale, scientists are not out of their jobs. AI is going to massively accelerate the pace of science, increase productivity, let individual scientists make way more discoveries way faster, and is going to make science overall more fun. But the model is going to be collaboration between humans and AI, not replacement.
The key difference here between science and e.g. software engineering is that science is not verifiable in any rapid/convenient way (unlike software), unlike programming. We still need humans for their scientific taste.
India came closest to a cheese tradition in 19th-century Bengal. Portuguese settlers brought acid-coagulation cheese-making techniques. Bengalis turned that into rasgulla, sandesh, ras malai, chhanar payesh etc. Of course, we had to take high quality dairy protein and turn it into dessert
this isn’t to say they aren’t important but theres a *lot* of extremely interesting types of biological data outside of unconditional protein structures, sequences, and small molecules. it is good to leave the PDB bubble sometimes and explore what else is possible
Great low-level blog post from @LatchBio . I’ve noticed the same thing with bio automation code.
I think the fundamental part is while the models are great at coding, coding is no longer the limiting factor, it’s the biological intuitions

Stoked for the day when the scientific standard for AI in Biology becomes “does it actually do the thing?” and not “does it point to a potential future in which it does the thing?”
Man I would not want to be an antibody-druggable drug target right now
Big Tech found an accessible use case for AI and they are going to dogpile so many binders on every exposed epitope you wont even be able to see the target anymore
