Yad Vashem is appalled by the latest antisemitic attacks in Australia, which include an arson attack on a synagogue in Melbourne and the vandalizing of an Israeli restaurant by a hostile mob.
These attacks reflect the growing and real threat against Jews in Australia and around the world, which must be unequivocally denounced.
Yad Vashem has repeatedly called on Australia's leaders to take decisive action against the abhorrent rise in antisemitism in their country, including in personal meetings between Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan and the premiers of Victoria and New South Wales. The events of the past weekend clearly show that not enough is being done. The perpetrators must face justice and the Australian authorities should implement robust educational initiatives to combat hatred and to teach about the dire dangers of unchecked antisemitism.
