「カタカナ英語が実際の英語の発音と違う」というのは全くその通りと思いますが、status≒ステータスは比較的実際の発音と近い気がするなぁと思ってレスしてしまいまいました。ストレス(アクセント)がスタにあれば多分どれでもOK

Japanese English learners who start learning after getting old has difficulty on distinguish some sounds such as L and R. I think what elementary school should put importance on is firstly LISTENING. Other skills like reading can be learned after they get old.
