Quick reminder to journalists that the Old City of Jerusalem (including Al-Aqsa mosque) is not in Israel, it is located entirely within occupied East Jerusalem. I'm amazed by how few stories acknowledge this critical contextual detail.

During a media event, @JustinTrudeau offered a statement on Israel. Unlike Melanie Joly’s ‘strong condemnation’ of Israel’s attack on worshippers at Al Aqsa, he is “concerned” about unspecified violence “around” the mosque. (He did however directly condemn Palestinian rockets).

Minister Alghabra, you approved a $36M drone contract with Israel’s largest arms company, Elbit Systems, which markets its weapons as “field tested” after testing them on civilians in Gaza. Canada must sanction apartheid Israel & end all arms deals with them immediately.

Canada consistently votes against UNGA resolutions supporting Palestinians or condemning Israel human rights violations. As Canadas representative to the UN, you are in a position of power to take concrete action against these crimes. This weak statement does not suffice.

I have visited the holy sites — the Western Wall, the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. I was struck by worshippers’ devotion, their spirituality.

This type of aggression should be unacceptable to everyone.

We need a path to peace, not violence.
