As the "cockroach" movement continues, let's look at the numbers behind students' anger.
India's education-spend down from 2.9% in FY20 to 2.7% of GDP in FY26 against 6% target set by National Education Policy 2020. It trails lower-middle-income country average of 3.4% & South Asia regional average of 2.9%.
Health spend at 1.8% in FY26, far lower than 2.5% of GDP target set at National Health Policy 2017.
India's per-capita public health spending is among the world's lowest — less than Bhutan & Sri Lanka & far behind other BRICS nations.
India ranks 130 out of 193 countries on the UN Human Development Index which combines health, education & income. India sits in the "medium human development" category with a value of 0.685. China (78th), Sri Lanka (89th) and Bhutan (125th) rank above India; Bangladesh is tied at 130th.

Asking Indians to trust the TV channels & newspapers running the Delhi Police version of events over what they personally witnessed confirms what Orwell wrote:
"The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."
If India still had a functional higher judiciary, one of the benches would have taken suo moto notice of yesterday's unprovoked police brutality in the national capital and ordered an enquiry or an investigation. But alas.
This protest "is also an invitation to imagine a more just future."
Excellent @manojkjhadu piece. He writes as someone who teaches sociology of social movements and as a practitioner of political democracy in today's India.
This report by @SobhanaNair is excellent and captures what was visible among the youth in Delhi, unlike other coverage which somehow wants to limit it to the CJP and Wangchuk. This was beyond that.
I am entirely biased. Entirely. Which is my right. And here’s the nuance you’re too stupid to get. This govt is still MY govt. They work for you and me equally and are accountable to both of us. I have zero interest in ousting them. I accept that that are in power and I expect them to work for you me and every kid on that street irrespective of how we all voted.
Biggest question that surrounds the current atmosphere, hidden in noise, is restoring confidence of the students across India and NEET aspirants in the system which has been flawed & tampered-with countless times. Is there any Guarantee that there won’t be any paper leaks again?
"The harsh realities of sexual harassment, gender-based violence, and low conviction rates of perpetrators that plague Indian society stand in contrast to India’s global aspirations" write Aparna Divya on @SAVoices.

With direct flights resumed after five years, India-China relations are showing signs of tactical calm. But will this turn into strategic moderation or just a pause in competition? https://t.co/MXt80SiYs0
