Adventurer Tim Severin and a crew of four depart in a leather boat from Tralee in County Kerry, Ireland, as part of an effort to prove that the 6th-century monk Saint Brendan of Clonfert could have traveled to North America 900 years before Christopher Columbus.
The 36ft (11m) vessel, named the Brendan, is made from 42 ox hides, and will attempt over the next several weeks to reach North America.

@50YearsAgoLive The Sallins Cases is viewed as one of the most serious miscarriages of justice in recent Irish history. Nicky Kelly later received a significant compensation payment from the state. It is widely accepted that Kelly and the other defendants were not involved in the robbery.
The loss of Len Deighton at 97 is sad, but sadness is temporary.
What endures is his legacy of characters and stories, illustrations and recipes, that have given pleasure to readers around the world for over 60 years.
