Costco built its own chicken company to protect the $4.99 rotisserie chicken. It's called Lincoln Premium Poultry, it's in Fremont, Nebraska, and it opened in 2019 with its own hatchery, feed mill and processing plant.

The plant was built to handle about 2 million chickens a week, around a third of the chicken Costco sells. Local farmers raise the birds under long contracts in barns built for the program. The whole complex cost around $400 million.

A company that buys its chickens from someone else has to take whatever price the supplier charges. Owning the operation from the hatchery to the package is how Costco keeps the rotisserie chicken at the same price year after year.
