Most people know Kainji Dam for generating electricity,but few realize it transformed an entire region.When the dam was completed in 1968,it created Kainji Lake, one of Africa's largest man made lakes. The project reshaped the landscape, relocated thousands of people and created new opportunities for fishing and transportation.

Today,the lake is home to hundreds of fish species as well as hippos, crocodiles and countless water birds. It also borders Kainji Lake National Park, Nigeria's oldest national park, which protects wildlife such as elephants,lions,leopards,buffaloes and many other native species.

Kainji Dam is more than a source of electricity it's a remarkable example of how one engineering project changed Nigeria's environment,wildlife and the lives of people for generations.
