@markgjudge ‘Androgynous’ is a sincere, tender love song about two gender nonconforming individuals. Punk is inexorably linked to queer culture, it came from rent boys & sexually ambiguous icons like Lou Reed, Bowie, Iggy, DeeDee, Jayne County, Randy Turner, Gary Floyd, Darby Crash etc.
@JamesUrbaniak Not to detract from your point but Joy Division had much more presentational slickness than The Beatles, assuming you’re talking about their recorded output. Both of their studio albums are absolutely immaculate, pristine to a degree that George Martin could only aspire to.
@hordrackcafe There’s an eponymous album from 1980 that is stacked with songs that are highly playlist friendly. If you like that genre, it’s unfathomable to me that anyone couldn’t look past Cave to appreciate the music, particularly the extraordinary guitar playing of Rowland S Howard.
@hordrackcafe You think he’d be more grateful that what they aren’t mainly known for is certain members being egregious, hidden in plain sight pedophiles. Great band but it’s crazy what they got away with.
@GalacticCookie0@willmenaker@mgs2twiops I actually forget that one a lot of the time but yeah, that’s probably the worst one, along with a couple of duds towards the very end that were somewhat understandable given everything going on. The one that grew in my affection after initially hating it is AYAMW. It’s mad!
@GalacticCookie0@willmenaker@mgs2twiops ‘Extricate’ has great songs but doesn’t hang together as much as an album as their other great works. The three after are really good, those ones are definitely underrated. I rate the production, though understand why many don’t. They don’t have many duds & quite a few bangers.
@GalacticCookie0@willmenaker@mgs2twiops I go back to ‘Levitate’ every so often to see if I can get my head around it but I think it’s the one where the external stuff around MES & the band seeped into the music too much & it sounds a bit all over the shop as a result. I still dig it but it’s amongst my least favourite.
@GalacticCookie0@willmenaker@mgs2twiops I think the early 90s trilogy listed there is all very good but I hesitate to call them top tier. They’re all steady but without high highs. However, I think Unutterable is much better than the previous two albums. FHR great but a little long & unfocused. You must get them all!
@willmenaker@mgs2twiops Dragnet, Grotesque, Hex, Perverted, Wonderful & Frightening, TNSG, Unutterable, Country on the Click, Imperial Wax Solvent, YFOC are all top shelf. The rest are merely very good & you must get them all.
