To monitor the implementation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement. The APPG calls for the protection of civilians and sustainable peace in the region.
@MarysMeals@Margaret4DR For many this isn’t an abstract anniversary - it’s a day of remembrance, grief and of reflection.
Ximena Borrazás’ photography is a reminder of the story behind every statistic.
Today, the APPG on Tigray marked the 5th year since the onset of the war on Tigray with an event featuring @MarysMeals’ documentary “On the Frontlines of Hunger” and the photography of @XimenaBorrazas capturing the human cost of violence and displacement.
@MarysMeals Heartfelt thanks to our Chair, @Margaret4DR and Officer Lord Browne of Ladyton, for leading a the discussion on the ongoing challenges and the need for continued UK engagement.
Many thanks to Lord Browne of Ladyton, for his Oral Question:
To ask HMG whether they are monitoring the escalating tension between Ethiopia + Eritrea, and what steps they are taking to reduce the risk of renewed cross-border conflict and protect civilians in the region.
That means sustained funding for survivor support services; safe mechanisms to provide testimony, legal redress, and protection from reprisal.
The Labour government’s pledge to halve VAWG, incl. CRSV, should inform funding + support for a survivor-centred peace process in Tigray.
APPG Tigray member @Lord_Alton highlights CRSV in Tigray. Accountability must be shaped and centred by survivors, ensuring their voices lead the response.
Tigray - Africa Minister @Lord_Collins responds to my letter highlighting reports of mass rape, forced pregnancy and sexual torture in Tigray that amount to crimes against humanity. Words, money, committees but impunity reigns . Exposes bankrupt U.K. policy on defining genocide & bringing perpetrators to justice @ShabanaMahmood@attorneygeneral@Keir_Starmer@rowenakahsay - Shocking Guardian report with graphic and distressing testimony and images: https://t.co/OUMMzWNkR6
We appreciate the UK’s engagement and the Minister’s response.
The facts are clear: Eritrean forces remain in Tigray committing rights violations.
In the absence of ICHREE, the UK must push for real accountability.
On 13 May, the APPG on Tigray met with Civil Society Organisations to hear first-hand accounts and insight on the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis and needs in Tigray.
@GorzoMovement@IrobAnina@Easeing_Access@Yikono_@VoiceDimtsi CSOs highlighted the gap between commitments and reality on the ground, despite the signing of CoHA. There were renewed calls for accountability and greater engagement from the UK in supporting the peacebuilding process.
