Oh dear.
Partly because our common humanity dictates that those of us from wealthy countries have an obligation to alleviate the suffering of those who are impoverished.
But there is a more pragmatic reason: political soft power. As someone who has lived and worked in both Asia and Africa, I can say there is a political battle for influence in the developing world, mainly between the USA and China. And make no mistake: the dismemberment of USAID has been a great gift to China as it seeks to influence governments, especially in Africa.
In years to come, we will come to see this as one of the most short-sighted and ignorant acts of political and economic vandalism.
