The Jason Arday story is tragic. It's also a test of who can hold multiple ideas at once.

1. He made up so much of his life story, a story that partially drove his rise. From fake elite running to fake charity numbers to even his story of his upbringing, to being a part of 7 Up, and so much more. The lies are astronomical, and have been documented by legitimate journalist.

He made Forrest Gump look believable.

2. He lied to journalist about absurd things, like a man threatening him with a knife in his office with zero CCTV backing it up, to receiving a pigs head which the police and the local pig butchers denied, and more. All verified by a journalist to never have happened.

3. By almost any reasonable read of his work, he plagiarized. Even the kindest read shows work that should NOT have acceptable for someone working at one of the most prestigious institutions in the world.

4. The media storm was crazy. He was everywhere. The modern social media storm incentivizing clicks and likes is overwhelming.

5. None of the above obviously means he deserved to die. It's tragic that he took his own life. Absolutely.

6. The universities and people around him did him a great disservice. Nearly all of the stories were easily verifiable with a little work. Ask any ultra runner and they'd have told you he didn't run 600 miles in 6 days. Dig a little on the claims of charity, 7 Up, etc. or phone his teachers or classmates of primary school and it would fall apart.

The institutions failed him. The people around him failed him. This should never have risen to this level. Someone somewhere should have confronted the inconsistencies early on and maybe, just maybe, gotten him help that he obviously needed.

In certain corners of the internet, this story has been taken as racism, and while I'm sure that for some people that might drive the ship, for the most part, this story went wild because it's something we've never seen before.

Someone in one of the most prestigious universities in the world, with the most insane backstory, one that experts have called without scientific precedence, was found to have made most of it up. At a time, when the DEI debate is loud. This wasn't a simple story of plagiarism that we've seen before. You can't compare it to that. It's of someone who rode a fictional story all the way to the top.

His death is tragic and sad.

And I'm sad to see it's going to be used in all corners of the internet for whatever supports your priors. You can already see it. It's turned into an us vs. them, with people losing their minds.

But the larger story to me is of institutions that failed. It's of not doing due diligence and intervening when there were obvious red flags that shouldn't have been promoted but instead should have been seen as signal to help, that something was amiss and that this person needed some mental health help, not to continually be promoted on the back of a story that he made up. At some point, he was trapped in the story he created, and the walls closed in on him quickly.
