For most people, a BDSM relationship is almost like a mechanical arrangement: the Dominant gives an order, and the submissive obeys without batting an eyelid. There's no room for arguments, slip-ups or resistance.
But the reality can be a lot more complicated than that. Because there's a whole, rather large group of submissives who find blind obedience simply... boring.
We're talking about brats- submissives who enjoy what's known as bratting. They're the ones who talk back, deliberately break the rules, roll their eyes, tease and provoke their Dominant at every opportunity.
But why would someone who claims they want to submit go out of their way to drive their partner absolutely up the wall?
In a traditional BDSM dynamic, things are pretty straightforward - the Dominant takes the lead. But with bratting, there's a fascinating shift in the balance of power. Something the BDSM community calls ‘topping from the bottom’.
When a brat blatantly refuses to follow an instruction or comes out with a cheeky remark, they're effectively directing the scene.
The submissive provokes their Dominant to get a particular reaction - usually some form of punishment.
And here's where it gets interesting. What we've actually got is a rather clever system of rewards and punishments in which... it's the submissive who's training the Dominant.
The brat is teaching their Dominant how to respond.
Think about it. Why does a two- or three-year-old deliberately spill their milk, look their parent straight in the eye and burst out laughing?
It's not simply because they're being naughty. They're testing how stable and predictable their world really is.
A child needs to know where their freedom ends and where the safe boundaries set by an adult begin.
And a very similar psychological mechanism can play out in adult kink relationships.
A submissive's cheekiness is essentially a challenge. The brat is saying:
‘Let's see if you've really got what it takes to be my Dominant. Are you strong enough, steady enough and confident enough to keep me in line?’
The moment the Dominant finally puts their foot down - in a controlled and safe way - sets a firm boundary and delivers the agreed punishment, it can feel like a moment of complete emotional release for the brat.
In that split second, all the resistance disappears.
The submissive gets the reassurance they've been looking for:
‘My partner is stronger than me. I can trust them. I can finally let go of control because they're the one in charge.’
For a brat, punishment isn't necessarily experienced as an act of aggression. Within a consensual dynamic, it can feel like the ultimate expression of care.
It's physical and emotional reassurance that their Dominant cares enough to help them bring their inner chaos under control.
For a more traditional submissive, the reward might be praise, a gentle pat on the head and hearing the words, ‘Good girl.’
But for a brat, that sort of dynamic can feel a bit too predictable.
Brats thrive on tension, excitement and that charged back-and-forth.
And here's another interesting point.
The worst possible punishment for a cheeky submissive isn't necessarily the belt, a flogging or being locked in a cage.
It might simply be... being completely ignored.
Imagine a brat talking back, trying to get a reaction, while their Dominant calmly carries on reading a book, completely unfazed by all the provocation.
For a brat who thrives on getting a response, that silence can be incredibly frustrating. It may even bring up feelings of anxiety or insecurity.
Because bratting can also be a way of getting your partner's full and undivided attention.
The moment the Dominant drops everything, catches hold of the brat, restrains them and starts firmly enforcing the agreed rules, the brat may feel like the most important person in the world.
All of their Dominant's attention, energy and physical strength are focused entirely on them.
And for some brats, that's exactly what they've been looking for all along.
So, what about you lot?
Do you recognise a bit of that cheeky, rebellious brat in yourselves? The sort who simply can't resist testing their partner's patience?
Or are you on the other side of the dynamic — the one who's constantly having to keep a rather mischievous, strong-willed submissive in check?
