⏱️How can pilots consistently apply the right recovery actions when seconds matter?
APS CEO Paul "BJ" Ransbury and EVP Flight Operations Clarke "Otter" McNeace recently joined UPRTA International President Dave Carbaugh and Jeffrey Wofford to discuss why leading operators are increasingly converging toward unified upset recovery strategies designed to improve pilot performance under startle, surprise, and time-critical conditions.

✈️NEW RESOURCE: UPRT Provider Evaluation Checklist + Four-Level UPRT Delivery Architecture
There are dozens of Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) programs in the market. Yet there has never been a simple way to compare what different training architectures are actually designed to accomplish.
To help flight department leaders evaluate their options, APS has released a provider-agnostic framework that outlines UPRT architecture levels and illustrates the relative operational Loss of Control In-flight (LOC-I) risk-mitigation potential each is structurally capable of delivering under near-perfect execution.
A key insight: simulation and on-aircraft training address different dimensions of the LOC-I threat. When appropriately integrated within a seamless UPRT program, their strengths become complementary, creating a more complete pilot development system than either modality can provide alone.
Importantly, this chart evaluates architectural capability—not provider performance. It shows what a training architecture is capable of achieving when optimally implemented. It does not determine whether any specific provider delivers outcomes consistent with that capability ceiling.
The framework for jet pilots was developed through a multi-disciplinary effort involving operational UPRT experts, aviation safety leaders, and independent analytical review. A more comprehensive publication detailing the methodology, assumptions, and conclusions is soon to be released.
