Proactive interference - is the reverse of interference to retroactive interference... this is when OLD info prevents the recall of NEWER info.
E.g. when trying to recall a new number, the old number you have previously had for years could proactively interfere with the recall
Retroactive interference - when more RECENT info gets in the way of trying to recall OLDER information.
E.g. calling your ex bf/gf the name of your new bf/gf.
The new name retroactively interferes with the old one, which is clearly problematic for recall.
Interference - an explanation for forgetting in LTM.
The basic theory states that interference occurs when info that is similar in format, gets in the way of the info someone is trying to recall.
The are 2 types of interference:
Retroactive and Proactive
Declarative memory - explicit memories that can be inspected and recalled consciously
Procedural memory- implicit memories, we are unable to consciously recall them
LTM includes any memories that held for durations upwards of 30 seconds+
LTM can also be split into declarative memories and procedural memories.
Declarative memory can be further sub-categorised into episodic and semantic memories
