PhD student at SUNY ESF studying attached and benthic cyanobacteria in the Finger Lakes, NY. Interested in all things water quality. Opinions are my own 💧☀️🧪
Still time to register (deadline extended!) for this awesome algae identification course @LouisCalderCtr taught by John Wehr. Check out very cool sites and meet some great people (last year @WiseAlgae, @aquatic_abby, @DrAlgaeGirl, @MiaWrey), plus you get to hang out with me. 🔬😝
ASLO is pleased to announce the newest cohort of the #NSFfunded#LOREX program! These 11 students will be embarking on international research exchanges in 4 host countries this summer and fall. Read more about the students and their projects here: https://t.co/Ro8diBlYZF
Girls! Help me put this on blast. The first ever conference on environmental science and studies @sunyesf is happening in April 2023. We need your help sharing this faaaar and wide. I know I follow a lot of faculty and researchers, please share with your students.
Hey sci twitter, what's the shelf life on your chlorophyll-a standard when it's already in extraction solution?
I think I purchased Sigma-Aldrich Chl-a from spinach (C5753) last year, but I'm not at the lab where that lot's spec sheet is... do I need to buy another?
A day late to #phycologyFriday and getting stumped again with an attached cyano ID. No heterocytes present. It's moniliform?Thought it had true branching but got to a point in the key where only false was mentioned... hints? Photos at 400x, 2nd pic is zoomed in.
Happy #phycologyfriday! Never did a proper intro, so I'm Abby 👋 My research uses artificial substrates to monitor attached cyanobacteria in lakes. Today involves prepping for my 12-week sampling next week, which means we're already 3/5 through the field season 🙁
Sometimes phycobiliprotein extractions aren't so bad 😌Standard spectra: phycocyanin crude extracted from cheap Spirulina (works fine) and phycoerythin purchased pre-purified (worth it). Spec identified the peaks!
It's #PhycologyFriday and I'm not sure where to start with this ID. Chain of tiny greens? Could it be a desmid? Cyano? (But I think I see chloroplasts and starch granules)
Found in periphyton assemblage from a mesotrophic lake. More details below 🔬
Mags in order: 40x(?) Spirogyra for scale, 400x, 630x, 630x. I added lugol's before 2nd photo, but couldn't tell if I was seeing starch or if refraction(?) was messing with the light/true colors.
Congratulations and thank you to John Wehr and @LouisCalderCtr algae class @DrAlgaeGirl, @WiseAlgae, @Abby__Webster, @MiaWrey, Robbin Matthews, Karen Collins, Heather Pembrook, Don Culjak, Puspha Naraine, John Kaurich for an awesome two weeks of collecting!! #PhycologyFriday
