Increasing the number of teams to 48 wasn’t exactly a decision made by FIFA to improve the quality of the tournament, but rather one driven by corporate and financial incentives. No single African or Asian team topped their group, all of the latter have already been eliminated (Australia isn’t exactly an Asian team), only Morocco from the former has so far qualified for the 1/16 finals.
