By brave, I mean that, unlike, for example, free Russian media, which, with very few exceptions, is based abroad, they have to largely stay inside Russia and rely on a wide network of local-based monitors.

And the danger is real: their leader, Grigory Melkonyants, spent the past 7 months in brutal detention centers, sometimes without a plank bed to sleep on. Even there, he is writing recommendations on how to organize elections in detention centers.

This might sound naive or even stupid, but that is the distinct approach of 'Golos' and the reason their statement is so important.

So what they are actually saying and why? A short 🧵

I am worried about Vladimir Kara-Murza.

After the murder of Navalny, it became clear that the life of every Russian political prisoner is under threat. But the fate of Kara-Murza causes particular concern.

On one hand, Alexei and Vladimir are quite different. But on the other – they have much more in common than it might seem at first glance.

Both created personal problems for Putin's circle. Navalny – with anti-corruption investigations and exposures. Kara-Murza – by lobbying for personal sanctions in the West.

Both are de facto declared enemies of the state in Russia. Navalny is included in the list of terrorists and extremists posing a threat to national security. Kara-Murza is accused of treason and received an unprecedented 25 years in a penal colony in court.

The prison system is absolutely merciless to both. Alexei and Vladimir have been constantly in solitary confinement, subjected to torturous conditions. Both have experienced serious health problems.

Finally, the main point: Putin has already tried to kill both of them. Navalny and Kara-Murza survived assassination attempts organized by the special services.

I understand that my words are a voice crying in the wilderness. But Vladimir Kara-Murza must be saved. The threat to his life is not just real; it is dire.

Almost all Western leaders have spoken out about the death of Navalny, placing responsibility for this tragedy on Putin.

And today, I want to appeal to the leadership of the UN @antonioguterres, to the President of the US @JoeBiden, @BarackObama , to the leaders of the EU countries @OlafScholz, @EmmanuelMacron, @RishiSunak, @c_lindner . Show goodwill and use all diplomatic tools to achieve the earliest possible release of Kara-Murza. Do it before it's too late.

В лагерный барак новости приходят медленно, и про гибель Алексея Навального я узнал лишь вчера. Сложно передать моё потрясение. Сложно собраться с мыслями. Боль и ужас невыносимы.

И всё же я не стану молчать – скажу то, что считаю важным.

Для меня не стоит вопрос: что случилось с Навальным? Не сомневаюсь, что он убит. Три года Алексей находился под контролем силовиков, которые в 2020-м уже организовали на него неудачное покушение. Теперь довели дело до конца.

Для меня не стоит вопрос: кто убил? Не сомневаюсь, что Путин. Он военный преступник. Навальный был его ключевым оппонентом в России и вызывал ненависть в Кремле. У Путина были и мотив, и возможности. Я убеждён, что он приказал убить.

Понимаю, как госпропаганда начнёт манипулировать общественным мнением. Скажут, что смерть Навального невыгодна президенту, что убивать его за месяц до выборов нелогично, что Путин сосредоточен на глобальной политике и у него нет времени думать про какого-то зека… Полная чушь, отметайте её сходу. После отравления Алексея в 2020-м пропаганда защищала Путина аргументом «хотел бы убить – убил бы». Всё верно. Он хотел, и он убил. И не просто убил, а убил демонстративно. Специально накануне выборов, чтобы по факту никто и не сомневался в причастности Путина. Так же демонстративно убил и Пригожина – чтобы тоже никто не сомневался.

В понимании Путина именно так утверждается власть: убийствами, жестокостью, показательной местью. Это мышление не государственного деятеля. Это мышление главаря банды. Так давайте честно признаем: Путин и есть главарь мафиозной структуры, слившейся с нашим государством. Он лишен каких-либо моральных и легальных ограничений. Он держит людей в страхе, а тех, кто не боится – сажает и уничтожает.

Поэтому был застрелен Борис Немцов. Поэтому убит Алексей Навальный. Три года в колонии его пытали карцерами и ломали, чтобы он попросил пощады. Не вышло, и тогда его лишили жизни.

Противостояние Навального и Путина показало масштаб личностей обоих. Алексей останется в истории человеком исключительного мужества, который шёл вперёд за то, во что верил. Шёл, презирая страх и смерть. Шёл с улыбкой и гордо поднятой головой. И погиб героем.

Путин же так и останется маленьким человеком, случайно получившим огромную власть. Персонажем, который прячется в бункере, убивает исподтишка и делает заложниками своих комплексов миллионы людей. Но я не желаю ему смерти. Мечтаю, чтобы он ответил за свои преступления не только перед божьим, но и перед земным судом.

Алексей Навальный был моим другом. Как и Борис Немцов. Мы делали общее дело и посвятили жизни тому, чтобы Россия стала мирной, свободной и счастливой. Теперь оба моих друга мертвы. Я ощущаю внутри чёрную пустоту. И, конечно, понимаю собственные риски. Я за решёткой, моя жизнь в руках Путина, и она в опасности. Но я продолжу гнуть свою линию.

Стоя над телом Бориса в феврале 2015 года, я поклялся себе не бояться, не сдаваться и не бежать. Спустя девять лет, оплакивая Алексея, могу лишь повторить эту клятву.

Пока в моей груди бьётся сердце, я буду сражаться с тиранией. Пока живу, я не убоюсь зла. Пока дышу, я буду со своим народом.
Клянусь.

Алексей, спи спокойно, брат.
