Cats understand death. If the cat’s person dies and the cat is not able to confirm the death, the cat may continue to wait, look for their person, or even grieve themselves to death.

It’s very important that the cat be able to spend a few moments with the dead person. When one of our kitties passes, we have a wake. We lay the body on a blanket and let the other kitties pay their respects. They will all come, usually one at a time. They will stand over their dead friend and stare. They will usually sniff and maybe lick. When they walk away, they know.

We learned the hard way that if a cat dies at the vet’s office we have to bring the body home for a wake. One of the male cats lost his brother and we failed to bring the body home. He screamed and cried for months looking for him. He eventually got so stressed that he got sick and died himself.

Cats tend to form a very special bond with their person. They choose who that person is. They may never completely recover from the loss of their person. Being able to confirm the finality of death makes the process much easier.

We need a pet store that has majority cat items. Because why when I go in most PET stores it’s really a DOG store with ONE row of cat food? The toy isle is shared with the dogs and we have a corner. I’m irritated.
