Due to the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara Region, attacks against innocent civilians, religious institutions, and civilian infrastructure continue.

At around 4:30 a.m. this morning, government forces carried out what has been described as a horrific drone strike on Abay Giyon Kidist Arsema Andinet Monastery, causing heavy casualties among innocent women, sources from the scene told Meseret Media.

This incident has once again highlighted the alarming pattern of repeated drone strikes targeting churches and monasteries. Eyewitnesses told our media outlet by telephone this evening that the strike targeted the section of the monastery known as “Bete-Egziabher” (House of God), where women prepare food for worshippers.

As a result, lives were lost, many people were injured, and the building was completely destroyed.

Because of this tragic drone strike, thirteen innocent women became casualties. One woman died instantly at the moment of the strike, while another died after being taken to the hospital due to the severity of her injuries.

“In addition to those who died, seven people sustained both serious and minor injuries. One of the injured remains in an extremely critical condition between life and death, while three others are receiving emergency medical treatment at a health facility,” a health professional who served as our source said.

“These women had come to the monastery to provide spiritual service and carry out charitable work,” said one of the monastery’s priests.

Explaining what happened, he added:

“Today was the commemoration of Saint Kirkos. Thirteen women had gathered to prepare grain for the commemoration. They were cleaning the grain when they were struck by the drone.”

The monastery’s priests and local residents expressed sorrow, saying the drone strike, carried out while the women were preparing grain for the religious observance, showed no regard for the sacred nature of the site or the innocence of the people there.

Sources at the scene said there was no military activity of any kind around the monastery at the time of the attack.

According to local residents and observers, there had been no Fano armed activity in the area during the past year. Because roads had been closed, the area had remained relatively isolated, and the only nearby security force was a riot police camp.

They said this further raises the question of why the attack was carried out against the monastery and innocent women.

Human rights advocates have repeatedly argued that using such heavy weaponry against a religious site where there is no military threat, no movement of armed forces, and only innocent civilians are present constitutes a violation of international human rights law.

The attack on Abay Giyon Kidist Arsema Andinet Monastery is one of a series of drone strikes that have targeted churches and innocent civilians in Ethiopia, particularly in the Amhara Region.

Since April 2023, following the conflict between government forces and Fano fighters, government forces have been making extensive use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).

As a result of these attacks, schools, marketplaces, and religious institutions in Finote Selam, Denbecha, Gedeb, and many other towns and rural kebeles across the Amhara Region have become targets. For example, numerous innocent civilians were killed in a drone strike in Finote Selam, while historic churches have been destroyed in other areas.

International human rights organizations, the EHRC, and the World Council of Churches (WCC) have repeatedly called for an immediate end to attacks against innocent civilians and religious sites.

The “Bete-Egziabher” section of the monastery was completely destroyed in today’s attack.

On July 22, 2026, the Abiy regime carried out a drone strike targeting St. Arsema Monastery, located near the Abay Bridge in the Mekane Selam area of Amhara Region. According to reports from the ground, the strike killed multiple monks and nuns, and caused extensive damage to the monastery.

The monastery, a religious site, was struck during the afternoon. In addition to the casualties, the attack destroyed monastery property and infrastructure.

Kork has been liberated! AFNM launched a counterattack and seized control of Kork town yesterday. At 5:00 AM, the 34th Regiment of the 206th Corps engaged regime forces entrenched in the town.
