Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force has begun equipping infantry with Israeli SMASH 3000 fire-control sights to counter drones.
The systems are mounted on Howa Type 20 assault rifles. Troops have already trained with them in the US, Japan and during the Dharma Guardian 26 exercise. Airfield security units of the Air Self-Defense Force are also receiving the sights.
Developed by SMARTSHOOTER, the compact module attaches to a standard Picatinny rail and combines a laser rangefinder, ballistic computer and computer-vision tracking. It predicts a moving target’s future position and enables precision engagement without replacing the weapon.
Japan signed its first contract in November 2024 (initial batch ~$560.8 million). The first systems entered service in 2025, with further orders underway to expand the capability across infantry units.
