Principles of Reading and Writing Practice, c. 1840
Among the many arts and skills in the world, each has its own profound path.
Among them, however, learning and writing are essential arts that neither those of high status nor those of low status can afford to be without.
For example, matters that cannot be conveyed through another person or by verbal message, or private affairs and matters one hesitates to make public, can be expressed in writing while remaining at home. By setting down one’s thoughts with a single brushstroke on a single sheet of paper, one may make one’s name known not only throughout Japan, but even as far as China, India, and lands ten thousand miles beyond.
This is indeed the noble virtue of the way of letters and writing.
