Code complexity v years of programming 📈

I used to be obsessed with complexity and regularly tried to fit as many patterns, ‘best practices’ and flavour of the month approaches in as possible.

I genuinely thought I was doing the right thing because yanno ... 'decoupling', 'separation of concerns', 'SOLID' etc.

Looking back now I know I over architected some apps and made them more complicated than they needed to be 🤦🏻‍♂️. I think this probably happens to a lot of devs at a certain point in their career?

I found the below related graph (@flaviocopes) which I largely agree with, I would make two amendments to it though 👇🏻 ...

1️⃣ I’d probably change ‘years of programming’ to ‘level of experience’ as it really depends on what you’ve been doing, not necessarily just years of experience ...

and ...

2️⃣ Somehow highlight that the 'super simple code' on the left is of course quite different from the 'super simple code' on the right ...

What do you think? Did you go through a period of over-engineering systems to try and conform to 'best practices' like me?
