Bill Parcells shares the difference between winners and losers.
"Losers assemble in little groups and complain about the coaches and the players in other little groups."
"But winners assemble as a team."
Winners don't point fingers and they don't make excuses.
They dedicate themselves to personal excellence and team excellence.
They commit to the team, bringing a positive attitude, and doing the work.
(Quote referenced from Emlen Tunnell)
Pete Carroll shares the 3 team rules he uses to build culture.
Not 10 values. Not a 100-page manual. 3 rules.
Simple, repeatable, and powerful.
1: Always protect the team - "This isn't just about behavior. It's about conscience."
2: No whining, no complaining, no excuses - "Self-talk is so valuable. The words that we say are followed by our actions."
3: Be early - "You can't be early by accident. You need a plan."
These 3 rules work because they shape behavior, mindset, and identity.
The best cultures set standards with clarity and consistency. People know what to expect and what's expected of them.

A few things that East Grand Forks, Minnesota is doing a little bit differently…
1. Their 10u squirts play in-house until January when they form travel teams
2. Their 10u squirts play half ice games until January when they form travel teams
3. Their 10u squirt teams don’t have more than 10 players on a team
4. Their 10u squirts follow LTAD principles where all coaches are coaching all players in station based practices.
Last season they won the Minnesota State High School championship.
Associations are taking notice of their success and their LTAD (long term athlete development) approach and starting to incorporate these principles into their development plans. Amazing stuff.

The best thing you can do as a teammate is bring your best in practice. The most selfish thing you can do as a teammate is not bring your best to practice.
YOUTH COACHES,
Two things.
1. Let your defensemen make breakout passes up the middle.
2. Let your defensemen make breakout passes on their backhand.
You will be helping them to play at the higher levels of hockey.
With love,
Jeff LoVecchio

What Geno Auriemma told his team before the Final Four… might be the best mindset advice you’ll hear all year.
Geno has 11 national titles… and until Friday night, a losing record in the Final Four.
Before the game, he told his team:
💬 “Nobody introduces me as the guy who lost 12 Final Fours.”
The message? People don’t define you by failure. They remember how you showed up.
So stop obsessing over the outcome.
Do the work. And give it everything you’ve got.
If it’s good enough, you’ll get the win.
If it’s not? Hold your head high and keep moving forward.
Just don’t let fear be the thing that holds you back.
⬇️ Save this for the next time self-doubt creeps in.

The hardest job in coaching?
Being married to one.
The challenges are real: The long hours, the emotional rollercoaster, the sacrifices.
But behind every great coach is a spouse who makes it all possible.
