Effective unit planning creates a ripple effect. The transdisciplinary theme gives learning a wider purpose, while the central idea, concepts and lines of inquiry guide deeper exploration.
Teacher planning check:
What do we want children to understand? What might invite investigation? What support will they need? What decisions will remain theirs?
Before stepping in, ask yourself: “What is this learner trying to do? What does their thinking reveal? What support would help them move forward?”
A curious coach listens carefully, teaches when needed and adjusts support as learners become more independent.
Ask, “Do we need to revisit an idea, find out more, reorganise our thinking or try again?”
Keep the learning goal clear while allowing time and different routes towards understanding.
Notice → ask for more thinking → choose a responsive next step → check what changed.
Keep the learning purpose in view while adjusting the questions, resources, support or time in response to what children reveal.
