I didn’t realize it at the time, but my journey to the Catholic Church in many ways began through my interaction with Jews.

On my first trip to Israel in 2013, I asked all the Orthodox Jews I met, “Pretend for a moment you believed Jesus was the Messiah. If that was so, which Christian denomination do you think would be His Church?”

EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM said “the Catholic Church.”

That really shocked and annoyed my evangelical Protestant ears. But it also deeply intrigued me.

Today, a decade later, I can say that the necessity of continuity and fulfillment between Old and New Testaments is indeed one of the biggest reasons I am Catholic today. All that was foreshadowed in the Old is fulfilled in the New, as the Church Fathers have so powerful taught (and continue to teach) me.

Priesthood, altar, sacrifice, authority, the moral law, and a countless variety of other things are all fulfilled in the Catholic priesthood, the Catholic altar, the sacrifice of the Eucharist, the authority of the successors of the Apostles, the law of Christ, etc., all brought to fruition by the fact that the Holy Spirit Jeremiah prophesied would write the law on our hearts, and that Ezekiel promised would cleanse us from all sin, has come. That Holy Spirit transforms and renews us from within by the grace of the sacraments—a free and glorious gift we could never earn by our own works, lest any of us should boast. “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction…” (Romans 15:4)

In Christ, Jews and Gentiles are no longer at enmity, but one. In the Messiah, they are both equally sons and daughters of Abraham, by being spiritually incorporated into his seed, his heir according to the flesh, Jesus Christ. Both Jew and Gentile are now under the one New Covenant, ratified by Christ’s blood, and equal members in God’s Temple, His Body, the one, holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

If Jesus Christ is the Messiah, which is His Church? As my Jewish friends told me so many years ago long before I was looking: “the Catholic Church.”
