“No hate symbols” “No Nazis” - one of our Southern California volunteers found this note stuck to his door on the occasion of #Diwali, when it is customary for Hindus to draw a sacred Swastika welcoming peace, prosperity and all that is auspicious and sacred. The words “Shubh” and “Laabh” (seen in Sanskrit right above the Swastika in the picture) are also written for such purposes.
Incidents like these are a great reminder of why our Swastika Education and Awareness Campaign and the Swastika Awareness Coalition are so important in disseminating the right education about our sacred symbols and distinguishing them from symbols of hate. As a reminder, California law allows Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and others to display a sacred Swastika for religious and cultural purposes. We must continue to educate people around us about these important distinctions.
Many people have no issues distinguishing between a sacred cross and a burning cross. So, we must ensure that, with time, people can learn to distinguish between the Swastika and the Hakenkreuz (hooked cross).
