The #1 reason to do an Area Study is to identify what you're up against.
If you want to identify contingency scenarios, start by identifying your local threats and hazards. I dedicate an entire chapter to this process.

If you are in the west take heed. It's not just the Colorado River Basin or Rio Grande, the Oglala Aquifer is being depleted too. This is a major long-term problem.
It's easy to focus your Area Study on gangs, crime, and local politics (I repeat myself).
But the #1 risk you need to identify early is your access to clean water.
Many locales are danger close to having serious problems with clean drinking water. Assess that risk!
The custom Area Study I'm working on has a veteran population of 6.1% of the county.
Do you know what percentage of your county is veterans?
Might be a handy data point!
Take some time to identify local water sources (ponds, rivers, etc.) and consider how they'll positively or negatively impact your area during an emergency.

Water is one of the most important physical terrain features in your Area Study.
Water sustains life, but also can also create natural obstacles and chokepoints, pose a lethal flood risk, and be a vector for waterborne diseases, insects, contamination, and health risks.
An influential revolutionary anarchist website posted a new strategy that encourages affiliates to exploit local social and economic issues and agitate for revolutionary change.
This is yet another reason to look at local social conditions in your Area Study.
Lots of people who /think/ they know what they're doing will rush out and gather facts and add them to a binder.
Better than nothing, but we need a definite aim and goal, which is using intelligence to BUILD LOCAL POWER.
Otherwise, it's just a research project.
