Libya’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Sadiq Gharyani, has sharply criticized the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), saying the organization is operating illegally in the country and is primarily working to resettle migrants in Libya as a means of shielding Europe from the migration crisis.

In remarks made on Wednesday, the Grand Mufti urged Libyan authorities to expel the UNHCR “immediately,” describing its presence as unlawful.

He stressed that every foreign worker must possess a valid registration card, health certificates, and complete legal documentation.

At the same time, the top religious cleric warned against rising calls for violence against migrants, describing such actions as religiously impermissible.
