Professor Brian Cox explains what happens if you travel near the speed of light

At near-light speed, distance itself starts behaving strangely.

At CERN, protons run around a ring 27 kilometres in circumference at 99.9999999% the speed of light.

From the protons' point of view, that ring is not 27 kilometres.

It's about four metres.

Distance itself shrinks by a factor of seven thousand at that speed.

Now scale it up.

Build a spacecraft that fast and the gap to Andromeda collapses the same way. In principle you cross it in a minute.

The cost is on the return trip.

Come back to Earth to tell everyone what you found, and four million years have passed here.
