The best way to avoid placing your bias on the market is to do a checklist for both the long and short side.
Note down arguments for both and if there is an overwhelming winner, go with that.
If it’s neutral, pass on the trade.
Most Traders Lose for One Reason: Fear
As humans, fear is hardwired into our DNA. Back when we lived in caves, fear kept us alive. You heard a twig snap in the dark? That fear pushed you to run before some grotesque beast turned you into dinner.
But here’s the problem: the same instinct that once kept us alive can now keep us small. Fear can become your biggest enemy.
This isn’t just true in trading - though it’s especially relevant there - it’s true in life.
Take relationships. People think the opposite of love is hate. I disagree. The opposite of love is fear. Fear of rejection, fear of abandonment, fear of not being “enough.” These fears stop people from saying how they really feel, from taking chances, from letting others in. In the end, fear doesn’t protect them - it isolates them.
Now trading? Fear is lethal.
Fear makes you sell bottoms and chase tops.
Fear freezes you right before the winning trade you’ve studied for.
Fear makes you abandon strategy and hand control of your capital to raw emotion.
Fear feeds the mindset of poverty - it convinces you to protect scraps instead of reaching for abundance.
So what’s the antidote?
For me, it came from the skies. As a former Founder/CEO, I often had to travel. I flew several times a year. And every takeoff felt like a coin toss with death.
Until I discovered a universal truth: fear is mostly ignorance in disguise.
I went to flight school to face it head-on. On my first “discovery flight,” instead of sightseeing, I told the instructor: “Let’s do the stuff that scares people into quitting.” We stalled the plane, yanked it around, did everything that usually sends newbies running. When we landed, I said: “I can handle this. Where do I put down a deposit on my own aircraft?”
Today, when I’m a passenger, I’m not scripting a last goodbye text to my daughters. I can relax. I can even reassure the nervous stranger next to me. Because now I know how it works.
That’s the key: education kills fear.
When you truly understand something - whether it’s aviation, relationships, or trading - fear begins to evaporate. Knowledge doesn’t just build confidence; it rewires your brain from panic to power.
And in trading, that means studying the thing you've set out to do until it’s second nature.
Fear thrives in the dark cave. Illuminate it, and it dies.
