I am deeply disappointed with GMMTV’s response. It failed to address one of the most important concerns: how will GMMTV take responsibility for the Rakhine traditional oil-lamp dance, a dance performed as an offering to the Buddha? This is not a minor detail that can simply be overlooked.
Honestly, the response feels like a superficial attempt to offer just enough reassurance to calm public criticism and protect ticket sales, rather than a sincere effort to acknowledge the cultural harm and take meaningful responsibility.
Using another country’s traditional culture without acknowledging its origins, while presenting it in a way that could mislead audiences into believing it belongs to one’s own culture, is not responsible filmmaking. Cultural heritage is not merely an aesthetic element to be borrowed for entertainment. It carries the history, identity, beliefs, and traditions of the people to whom it belongs.
More importantly, is it appropriate to take a dance deeply associated with Buddhist devotion and present it as entertainment performed for the amusement of men, without properly acknowledging or respecting its religious and cultural significance? This raises serious concerns about how the original tradition has been represented and whether the people who preserve it have been treated with the respect they deserve.
When concerns about cultural misrepresentation are raised, the responsible response is to investigate the facts, acknowledge the origins of the tradition, address the specific concerns raised, and explain clearly what corrective actions will be taken. If mistakes have been made, they should be corrected—not brushed aside with a vague statement.
The issue is not simply whether one culture is allowed to draw inspiration from another. Cultures have influenced one another throughout history, and cultural exchange can be a beautiful thing. But cultural exchange is not the same as cultural misrepresentation. Inspiration is not an excuse to erase origins, distort meaning, or disregard the people whose heritage is being used.
The freedom to create art does not grant anyone the right to misrepresent another community’s cultural heritage without accountability. Genuine respect requires more than a general statement of goodwill. It requires acknowledgment, accuracy, transparency, and meaningful action.
And saying that the series is a work of fiction inspired by cultures from around the world is not an adequate response to the concerns being raised. Fiction does not erase cultural origins, excuse misrepresentation, or absolve creators of their responsibility to the communities whose traditions they portray.
We are not asking for a vague explanation. We are asking for accountability, proper acknowledgment of Rakhine cultural heritage, and a clear answer to how this specific issue will be addressed.
Cultural heritage deserves more than a convenient explanation issued in response to backlash. It deserves genuine respect.

Cultural inspiration without recognition is not true appreciation. If you take inspiration from another country’s traditional culture and truly value it, you should definitely give proper credit for it.

Fictional storytelling does not make real cultural heritage ownerless, nor does creative freedom justify misrepresenting another nation's traditions.
We ask @GMMTV to take responsibility and respect Myanmar culture.
