On this day, at approximately 08:09:05 UTC, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 (VT-ANB) bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The aircraft struck a student hostel just 32 seconds after liftoff.
The disaster claimed the lives of 241 of the 242 people onboard, as well as 19 people on the ground, marking the first fatal crash and hull loss of a Boeing 787 in history.
According to the preliminary report, the Engine 1 and Engine 2 fuel cutoff switches transitioned from RUN to CUTOFF one second apart. The cockpit voice recorder captured one pilot asking the other why he had cut off the fuel, to which the other pilot replied that he had not done so.
