Approaching end of 2025, this is my take on the five main problems countries with advanced economies face on the way to 2030:
1. Homelessness/Housing crisis.
2. Relative poverty (aka affordability crisis): Working hard but falling behind.
3. Radical Islam: an ideology that rejects integration and fuels extremism.
4. Populist movements (left & right) attacks on liberal democracy institutions: election legitimacy, separation of powers (including respect for court decisions), media independence, police work.
5. Climate adaptation: the political/economic instability from the costs of adapting to extreme weather, water scarcity, insurance withdrawal, and energy transition bottlenecks.

Austria's ruling party just published a 29-page strategy document on the Muslim Brotherhood.

It names exactly where the infiltration is happening.

Political parties. State-sponsored NGOs. Schools. Childcare facilities. Associations. Umbrella organisations. Educational institutions. Not mosques. Political structures.

The document is precise about the method:

"Islamization from below." Train individuals ideologically. Insert them into civic life. Let them work their way into the institutions that shape how a society thinks and governs itself.

Austria's parliament has simultaneously submitted a formal question asking whether intelligence chiefs were ordered by ministers to suppress surveillance results on political Islam.

Read that again. MPs are asking whether the government was told to look away.

Austria is further ahead than any other European country in naming this. It has banned Brotherhood symbols, closed radical mosques, expelled imams and now published a comprehensive counter-strategy naming specific institutional targets.

The EU designation question has been sitting unanswered since January.

Why is it hot in Europe this week?

Well, it has to do with the “omega block” in the jet stream. Omega blocks get their name because they resemble the Greek uppercase letter omega, Ω.

You can see that in the synoptic setup. The map below on the left shows the 500 mb geopotential height anomaly at 18z. The contour lines resemble the Ω shape due to an enormous high-pressure ridge in the mid-troposphere that is sandwiched between two low-pressure systems to its east and west.

Hot Saharan air has been advected—that is, horizontally transported—northward into western Europe due to anticyclonic (clockwise) airflow, and as that air mass moves north, it is compressed adiabatically beneath the ridge where air is sinking.

This process is natural and has nothing whatsoever to do with climate change or greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, there are quite a few studies suggesting that reduced latitudinal baroclinicity (north-to-south temperature gradient) caused by Arctic amplification could reduce the frequency of mid- and high-latitude blocking events (e.g., Hassanzadeh et al., 2014; Woollings et al., 2018).

There is, however, debate about this.

Europe has seen an unusual amount of these extreme heat events since 2019, but most other areas of the globe have not. The notable exception was the June–July 2021 Pacific Northwest heatwave in North America, but even that wasn’t as rare as previously thought.

The most likely explanation for this boils down to a combination of two things:

1️⃣ Undiagnosed changes in atmospheric circulation patterns.

2️⃣ Increased absorbed solar radiation at the surface due to reduced stratiform low- and mid-level cloud cover (increased sunniness), some of which is likely due to reduced atmospheric aerosol concentrations from the EU’s strict pollution regulations.

The overall increase in the “global mean temperature” (which mostly affects overnight lows) has very little to do with this event. Even in a “pre-industrialized” climate, a record-breaking heatwave would still be happening. Heck, the “global mean temperature” fell today despite the heat cranking up in Europe.

This is mostly weather systems moving around. When you have a chaotic system with two turbulent fluids interacting with each other (the atmosphere and ocean), wild things can happen.

Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch walked into the French parliament this week and told lawmakers Europe has exactly two years to build independent AI infrastructure or hand over one trillion dollars in spending to American tech companies.

The math he laid out should be front-page news.

This is not a technology story. It is a macroeconomic one.

Global wages are fifty trillion dollars. AI will cost around ten percent of that. Europe's share is nine trillion. Which means over one trillion dollars in AI spending over the next five years flowing somewhere.

Europe already sends 250 billion dollars a year to the US in digital services. Every dollar that leaves funds American R&D. None of it comes back.

Mario Draghi's competitiveness report last year made the same point from a different angle. Europe needs eight hundred billion euros in annual investment just to close its existing productivity gap with the US.

AI dependency makes that gap structural. You cannot close a productivity gap when the tool driving productivity is owned by your competitor.

Mensch compared it to gas. The same way Europe discovered too late what energy dependence costs in a crisis, it is standing at the same crossroads with AI right now.

The compute is being allocated today. The chips are being spoken for today.

Europe is watching it happen and calling it a technology debate.

It is not. It is a sovereignty one.

Je reconnais quelqu’un d’intelligent à une seule chose : sa capacité à connecter les points, à être créatif au-delà de ses connaissances.

La mémorisation, la méthode, le savoir pour le savoir, le diplôme, la stagnation n’ont aucune forme de valeur.

J’ai beaucoup d’amis dans ce qu’on appelle avec mépris les couches “basses” : des électriciens, des carreleurs, des manutentionnaires, des gars qui se lèvent à 5h du matin et qui n’ont jamais mis les pieds dans un amphi.

Certains d’entre eux sont parmi les personnes les plus intelligentes que je connaisse.

Un électricien qui diagnostique une panne invisible raisonne en arbre de décision. Un carreleur qui calepine une pièce irrégulière fait de la géométrie appliquée sous contrainte. Un manutentionnaire qui optimise un flux de chargement résout un problème d’ordonnancement que des ingénieurs modélisent avec des solveurs.

Ils ne le savent pas, ils n’ont pas les mots pour le dire, et ils font des fautes d’orthographe en l’écrivant. Aucune importance. L’intelligence n’est pas dans le vocabulaire, elle est dans le raisonnement.

En face, vous avez l’énarque devenu perroquet à concepts qu’il ne maîtrise même pas. Il a appris à restituer, jamais à penser. Il confond la citation avec la compréhension, le diplôme avec la compétence, le jargon avec la profondeur.

Pendant des décennies, ce système a tenu parce que le savoir était rare. Celui qui avait mémorisé avait un avantage. Le “sachant” était un goulot d’étranglement rentable.

L’IA vient de rendre la mémorisation gratuite. Tout ce qui s’apprend par cœur, elle le restitue mieux, plus vite, sans ego.

Ce qui reste, c’est exactement ce qu’elle ne donne pas : le jugement, l’intuition forgée par le réel, la capacité à connecter des points que personne n’a connectés avant vous.

Le carreleur qui pense par lui-même va traverser l’ère de l’IA sans problème. Le perroquet à concepts va se faire écrabouiller.

L’IA ne détruit pas l’intelligence. Elle détruit les imposteurs qui s’en réclamaient.

Il faut avoir l'honnêteté de reconnaître le coup de génie de la gauche, parce que c'en est un. Le plus grand hold-up rhétorique du siècle tient en un seul mot : raciste.

Voici le mécanisme.

Après 1945, après les droits civiques, l'Occident a fait du racisme le mal absolu. À juste titre : c'est une de ses plus grandes conquêtes morales. « Raciste » est devenu le mot le plus radioactif de la langue, l'excommunication moderne, la mort sociale instantanée.

Le coup de génie a été de détourner ce capital moral. Pas pour protéger des personnes : pour protéger une idéologie.

L'égalitarisme des résultats ne gagne jamais un débat sur les faits. Il produit l'inverse de ce qu'il promet, partout, à chaque fois. Alors plutôt que de gagner le débat, on a rendu le débat impayable. Tu questionnes les résultats de l'immigration sans assimilation ? Raciste. Tu défends le mérite ? Raciste. Les maths avancées ? Racistes. Les frontières ? Racistes. Le mot a cessé de décrire un comportement pour décrire une position sur l'échiquier.

Et regardez la beauté technique du dispositif. Pas besoin d'arguments : l'accusation suffit. Pas besoin de procès : la dénégation aggrave le cas (votre défensivité prouve votre culpabilité). Pas besoin de police : la peur fait le travail, chacun se surveille lui-même et surveille son voisin gratuitement. Il suffit d'exécuter publiquement quelques exemples par an pour tenir des millions de gens. Une idéologie irréfutable, protégée par un mot imprononçable. Les deux pare-feux du même système : la French Theory avait aboli la vérité, l'accusation a aboli le débat.

Est-ce qu'un comité s'est réuni pour concevoir ça ? Pas besoin. Les idées subissent une sélection darwinienne : celles qui survivent sont celles qui se défendent le mieux. Marcuse avait quand même déposé le brevet dès 1965, noir sur blanc : tolérance pour les mouvements de gauche, intolérance pour ceux de droite. Le reste a évolué tout seul. Il faut l'avouer : c'était génial.

Mais ce dispositif génial avait un coût, et le coût a un bilan. À Rotherham, le rapport officiel Jay a établi que des fonctionnaires britanniques ont laissé plus de 1 400 gamines se faire exploiter pendant seize ans, en partie par peur d'être traités de racistes s'ils nommaient les faits. Relisez cette phrase. Des enfants ont été sacrifiées à un mot. Voilà ce que veut dire idéologie mortifère : pas une métaphore, un bilan.

Et maintenant, regardez ce qui s'effondre sous nos yeux.

Une insulte ne fonctionne que si elle fait peur, et une monnaie ne fonctionne que si elle est rare. Ils ont imprimé le mot comme Weimar imprimait le mark. Quand tout est raciste, plus rien ne l'est. Résultat : des tweets qui commencent par « traitez-moi de raciste si vous voulez » récoltent des dizaines de milliers de likes et l'approbation de l'homme le plus riche du monde. Il y a dix ans, cette phrase était un suicide professionnel. Aujourd'hui, c'est un haussement d'épaules. L'hyperinflation a tué la monnaie.

Et voilà la vraie tragédie, que les faussaires devront porter : en imprimant le mot sans limite, ils l'ont brûlé pour tout le monde. Y compris pour nommer le vrai racisme quand il existe, car il existe. Les faux-monnayeurs ne détruisent pas que leur arme. Ils détruisent le mot dont une société honnête a besoin.

Privée de son mot magique, l'idéologie va maintenant devoir faire ce qu'elle n'a jamais su faire : gagner un débat sur les faits.

Elle ne le gagnera pas. Au travail.
