Awami League is not willing to give up their power that easy. @Maxar, we urgently need satellite imagery of Bangladesh's capital to document the unfolding situation. @UNHumanRights, will you take action or remain silent?
#SaveBangladeshiStudents #BangladeshBleeding #StepDownHasina
The irony. The irony. … Here is the Uk Awami League, holding right now in London a peaceful rally outside the House of Commons in support of the #Bangladesh government, …. when back in Bangladesh the Awami league government law enforcement authorities have (a) literally just a few hours ago arrested students in a number of locations who tried to protest, (b) have in recent days arrested thousands of opposition and student activists and (c) a week ago quashed large student protests by shooting at, and killing, at least 200 protesters and on lookers.
These people are sloganising about the wonder of Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Awami League and the prime minister of Bangladesh responsible for all this.
To say this is shameless is the least of it
“We were protesting for a legitimate cause and were shot at for it. There is no justice here.”
Shot in the eyes, victims of Bangladesh protest violence face dark future https://t.co/XLaVkj2UDt
Why does Bangladesh think that #SheikhHasina is an authoritarian leader?
1. Suppression of Protests:
Hasina's response to the 2024 #QuotaReformMovement has been marked by violence and repression.
The use of police force, deployment of the military, and imposition of curfews have led to numerous deaths and injuries among protesters.
2. Media and Communication Blackouts:
Hasina has imposed internet and mobile network blackouts during protests, effectively isolating Bangladesh from the rest of the world and limiting information flow. This move is widely seen as an attempt to control the narrative and prevent the spread of dissent
3. Election Irregularities:
Allegations of election rigging and lack of transparency in the 2014, 2019, and 2024 elections have undermined the credibility of Hasina's government. Critics claim that these elections were marred by irregularities, which has eroded public trust and democratic processes.
4. Corruption and Mismanagement:
Rampant corruption and economic mismanagement have further fueled public discontent. Issues such as job scarcity, economic downturns, and corruption in job recruitment processes have exacerbated frustrations among the populace, particularly the youth and educated classes.
5. Control over Institutions:
Hasina's government has been accused of undermining the independence of key institutions, including the judiciary and media. There are concerns about the government's influence over these bodies, which has led to fears of a decline in democratic accountability and checks and balances.
6. Human Rights Violations:
Reports of human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture, have been associated with the government's crackdown on opposition and dissent. These actions have drawn international criticism and raised concerns about the state of human rights in Bangladesh.
These factors collectively contribute to the perception of Sheikh Hasina as an authoritarian leader, with her government increasingly viewed as suppressing democratic freedoms and centralizing power.
