A meat advertisement in Estonia sparked controversy after Russian speakers felt offended and discriminated against

Estonian meat company Rannarootsi caused a stir on social media with an ad for its new grilling product.

The poster shows two men with Ukrainian flags on their sleeves grilling meat by the sea, while the smoky background resembles the aftermath of attacks on Russian oil refineries.

The slogan reads: “The right grill turns bitter onions into sweet ones.”

But not everyone appreciated the creativity. Some users accused the company of inciting ethnic hatred.

The reason is that the word “sibul” (“onion”) is also used in Estonia as a derogatory nickname for Russian-speaking residents.

However, most Estonians viewed the advertisement as political humor and supported the approach.

One commenter wrote that they would now buy the company’s products specifically because of this campaign.
