Papergames (the studio behind Love and Deepspace, also called Infold) revealed a surprise sixth romanceable lead, Valko (Chinese name Ao Yin), during a livestream on June 22, 2026. He’s a 26 year old werewolf clan leader and tech CEO, debuting in the July 9 “Version 6.0” update. The reveal triggered widespread criticism over the character’s visual design, story background, and the company’s communication with players, leading to a surge in complaints, falling user ratings, and intense debate

The backlash centers on a few overlapping issues:

Design mismatch. His wolf-themed design and noticeably different Western realistic visual style sparked widespread discussion, with many players believing this shift creates a “visual discontinuity” that disrupts the game’s established aesthetic cohesion compared to the five existing leads.

A specific cutscene. Promotional material showed Valko breaking into the protagonist’s home, forcibly picking her up and throwing her onto a bed while she struggles, with dialogue including “Let me take a look inside.” A scene described as “gene anchoring, forced execution” left many female players feeling disgusted, since the game had built its reputation on respecting female players.

Lore conflict. His EonCore Group is closely tied to EVER, one of the game’s antagonistic organizations, so some players found it difficult to accept romancing a character tied to the opposing faction.

The bigger underlying grievance. Many longtime fans argue the core issue lies elsewhere: the five existing love interests have gone months without meaningful story updates, with some players claiming they’ve waited more than 500 days for new content, and felt the studio prioritized a flashy new character/gacha banner over the cast they’d already invested in.

It escalated into real world protest:

the game’s official Chinese social media accounts reportedly lost around one million followers, and Papergames installed a Valko-themed display outside its headquarters, which protesters responded to by leaving cow dung in delivery lockers, white and yellow funeral chrysanthemums, curse banners, glutinous rice, and pomelo leaves all symbolically tied to mourning/cleansing rituals in Chinese culture, meant as an insult.

Papergames issued an apology on June 28, acknowledging “shortcomings in how Valko was presented and how information was communicated,” promising existing leads’ stories wouldn’t be neglected, and giving compensation worth 20 free pulls but did not change Valko’s release date, which only fueled more anger. As of the most recent reports, the studio reportedly scrapped Valko’s release entirely and said it would focus only on the five existing love interests going forward which then sparked a second wave of backlash, this time from global fans who wanted Valko to stay and called the cancellation “consumer fraud” given the pre-marketing already done.

There’s also a messier layer in the discourse: some TikTok/social commentary frames CN fans’ reaction as rooted in valid consumer/feminist grievances against the studio, while other voices accuse parts of the backlash of being racist or homophobic toward Valko’s appearance. That’s contested territory and depends heavily on which posts you’re looking at, so take individual viral claims with some skepticism.
