This new paper drops a rigorous, scenario-based test spanning biology, chemistry, materials, and physics—where domain experts set up genuine research projects and LLMs must not just answer questions, but propose experiments and interpret results.

The findings? Even the biggest, flashiest LLMs fall short on actual scientific discovery, with performance gaps vs. standard benchmarks and no clear "best" model across tasks. Scaling up size doesn’t close the gap. We're still far from true scientific superintelligence, but LLMs do show flashes of insight—and even serendipity—on hard research problems.
